Dearest Share Square user,

The adventure of Share Square comes to an end. Although we know visual organization and collaboration has a great future ahead we realize our current path of development based on MS Silverlight will not be sustainable. Therefore, unfortunately, at this time we have to call it quits. Depending on your needs, Canvasdropr or Dropmark may provide an alternative for you.

We are grateful for your support, feedback and use of Share Square. We also hope you have enjoyed using Share Square as much as we have enjoyed making it. Without you we would never have learned so much. Of course we realize that you may have data on Share Square which you would like to copy or retrieve.

You will have until the 1st of October to do so. After this date all your stored documents and pinboard information will be deleted. If you have any trouble retrieving your data before this date, please let us know, so we can try and help. However, since we take your privacy very seriously, we are unable to make any screenshots or renders of your pinboard on behalf of you.

New BETA release 0.4.2

We are excited to announce an update of Share Square. Perhaps you have already seen our newest release of Share Square. We have fixed several bugs and added some improvements. Also we have added some new features. We are thrilled to let you use it. Check out all features and improvements by starting up the Share Square application.

Improvements using hand mode
We have made several improvements of the hand mode tool. It works smoother and quicker. Also we have enabled zooming which makes it easier to presentations. By double clicking on a folder you van now zoom in and out on folders.

Webpage previews
A new feature we have added is the possibility to generate screenshots of webpages into Share Square. With this feature is it, for example, very easy to organize your research material just by adding an URL to your pinboard. You just copy the URL of the page or images in your browser and paste it into Share Square.

Invite people and more…

We have made some improvements in our visual layout of the Share Square application. You can now see how many documents you have uploaded on a pinboard and you can now easily invite people by clicking on the +add button.

One other thing…
As of 2 July 2012 we are slowly opening our waiting list to new users. If you have not signed up at www.sharesquare.com make sure you do it now!

How do you know Share Square?
I found out about Share Square through Facebook and got in to contact with them to give it a try.

What was your first impression?
I thought Share Square had a nice website and a simple setup. Also It would be handy for working together on a project with my compagnon.

How do you use Share Square?
I use it for our Architectural Office. When I have some drawings i want my compagnon to look at I’ll just put them on Share Square. Then she can put her notes by drawings when she has time for it.

How does Share Square make your (project)work easier?
Now it is much quicker and more efficient to share my drawings. We don’t have to mail each other all the time anymore. By using Share Square we prevent misunderstandings, which we often had by email.

And the last question is about your future use of Share Square. What do you miss and what can we improve?
For now I don’t have much that I miss. Although it would be nice to have a visual way of showing AutoCAD drawings. Just like Solidworks has.

How do you know Share Square?
Share Square was promoted at our faculty and when I saw the concept I was already very enthusiastic about using it.

What was your first impression?
I was very impressed. I already used Dropbox for a while but was convinced that Share Square would make collaboration better with the fact it has more possibilities.

How do you use Share Square?
At the moment I experimented a lot with Share Square. I am not doing any collaboration and projects, but now I use it as a tool to collect research materials. I like this very much because I can see everything visually and I can easily sort all research materials on how useful it is.

How does Share Square make your (project)work easier?
I expect that a project can easily be made (more) clear to others when you are discussing files and documents in a visual way. Collaborating when using a visual desktop is within architecture and creative users a very convenient tool and solution.

And the last question is about your future use of Share Square. What do you miss and what can we improve?
At the moment I don’t miss anything but I am sure I will come up with some things in the future. Well, to improve something, it would be nice get an indication within the interface when I am scrolling and/or zooming in or out.

Share Square @ CeBIT 2012

Last week Share Square visited CeBIT in Hannover, Germany. CeBIT is considered by many one of the largest events globally where all major IT manufacturers unveil their latest products and exhibit their services and portfolio to key members of the media, businesses and end users. An ideal place for Share Square to show our product to potential users.

By approaching several different companies that were exhibiting their services and products at CeBIT we tried to show them what we are building by pitching and showing our latest video. The reactions we got were overwhelming. Every single company we have spoken to was very interested in Share Square.

In conclusion, we can say that being at CeBIT 2012 has been very inspiring for us and we are more determined than before to deliver the best online collaboration tool for your project work, visually. Our goal for CeBIT 2013 will be to be one of the leading companies in online collaboration, using the best digital pinboard ever, named Share Square.

Collaboration Needs

The way organizations work is changing. We can observe a shift in industrial design from creating physical products towards developing services. The way companies and individuals organize themselves to reach their goals is evolving equally.

In order to provide new service oriented value propositions companies need to collaborate intensively with external partners on a per project basis. Effectively companies change more into network organizations. Consider, for example the NS business card: It not only allows you to travel by train but also use OV-fiets, greenwheels, Taxi’s and hotels.

In the film and game industries this transformation has already happened, and it is completely normal to have over 20 companies specialized in things like camera, animation and production work together to deliver one movie or game (the service).

As businesses are transforming to service oriented network organizations they are also getting more and more specialized. With todays web it is easy enough to find partners because even tiny and highly specialized companies can have global reach.

Of course industrial designers are long familiar with outsourcing parts of our manufacturing and even product development but with services our partners are now ‘peers’ and these peers are interdependent upon what the others know and deliver. They really need to collaborate.

In the past technologies such as phone, email and FTP have helped us solve issues with little interdependence. We could email the specifications and upload the drawings. In fact: these tools have enabled global manufacturing as we know it.

It is the next generation of collaboration tools that is enabling us to work with remote partners with strong interdependence. This kind of collaboration is not about manufacturing in China, but rather about intimate collaboration with companies both nearby and around the world. It also affects people within an organization. It increases worker flexibility and introduces the possibility to work from home.

So what tools enable us to collaborate on projects with strong independence?

I believe they essentially (should) create shared understanding. After all: What is a message worth if the receiver does not understand?

In the literature research of my graduation thesis ‘A Tool To Facilitate Creating Shared Understanding In Virtual Design Teams’ I have found three main requirements for creating shared understanding: Sharing information, awareness of who knows what and powerful (multi-channel) communication. Today we see companies use a large collection of tools such as file shares, IM and video conferencing to satisfy these needs. With sufficient team commitment this works, but there are many risks and pitfalls.

Ever since I started to think about collaboration tools years ago the idea stuck that there should be better tools. Now I have founded a company, Share Square in the firm belief that our world is changing and we can create better collaboration tools.

Share Square is a shared online digital pinboard that enables project groups to collaboratively share and organize information. It makes documents such as word, pdf and ppt visual and lets people organize them visually, add post-its and sketch like with a real pinboard. It creates awareness by showing which documents were edited by whom and allows powerful communication by allowing people to point to shared information in real-time.

As of this week Fabrique Invent is our first official customer! It marks an important milestone for Share Square. Amongst other things it shows Share Square is ready to be actually used. We are gearing up to enable actual professional use for more participants and are giving a number of private demonstrations to companies.

Yesterday we demonstrated Share Square on the YES!Delft network event. showing people collaborating on three computers simultaniously.

Considering the large amount of positive feedback, a stack of new business cards and a number of people seriously interested to participate in a pilot I think we can call this a succes.Up to the next milestone!

Sorry to keep you from updates so long! This post marks some significant happenings for Share Square.

For those of you watching the main site, maybe not new but Rowan has joined the team for one day a week. She will be doing user interaction design and graphics. It is now her third week and picking up the work well.

Seed money. Share Square completed a first (though modest) round of investment. We are now very seriously looking to hire a full-time programmer. In fact, I had the first interview this afternoon.

Share Square B.V. Share Square is becoming incorporated. This wednesday I was at the notary to setup all the details for becoming a B.V. It signifies that we are serious in bringing Share Square to market.

Yesterday we moved office to YES!Delft. It’s the TU Delft incubator. We now have a bigger office, and lots of cool people around. What is cool about it is that it is full of entrepreneurs with good ideas.
